Tip #2- Get Organized for School (Tip 2 of 10)
You can become the student you have always wanted to be! By evaluating and changing your study habits, you have already taken the first step toward academic success (see Tip #1). Now it’s time to get organized for school.
Getting organized is one of the most important steps you can take to raise your grades. Don't know where to begin? Here's how:
Don't have a backpack? Go get one NOW! Believe it or not, many students get poor grades because they do not come to class prepared or they lose assignments. Having a backpack to carry your school supplies, assignments, and books is the easiest thing you can do to get organized for school and raise your grades.
2. CLEAN out your backpack.
Does the inside of your backpack look like a disaster area? If so, you are in need of an extreme backpack makeover NOW!
Empty your backpack, then organize your papers into 3 piles:
1) Finish and return (school work/homework)
2) Corrected work
3) Throw away
Put aside pile #1 then save all graded work in a box to keep for the quarter, trimester, or semester. Saving graded assignments could save your grade later!
3. Take a serious look at your SCHOOL SUPPLIES. You can raise your grades by coming prepared to class every day!
Here are the top 5 school supplies you will need to keep in your backpack at all times:
1) Binder w/ dividers for each subject
2) Pencils and pens
3) Paper (wide ruled for elementary, college ruled for middle school/high school)
4) Folder for assignments
5) Planner w/ calendar for recording daily assignments and homework
4. Organize your SCHOOL DAY.
Planner: Record all daily work, homework, and upcoming quizzes and tests for each subject in your planner. (Many schools give out free planners to students.)Check off or highlight each item as you complete it.
Folder: Label one side of your folder "Finish and Return", and label the other side "Corrected work". Put completed homework in the "Finish and Return" side each night so that you can bring it back to school the next day.
Binder: Place handouts in their proper subject divider in your binder as you get them.
Completed steps 1-3? If so, you have learned how to get organized for school and you are on your way to becoming an outstanding student! Soon you will be bringing home a report card you can be proud of.
